Caroline Spelman appointed
as Environment Secretary

Caroline Spelman, Local MP and member of the
Diagonal
Lock Advisory Group has been appointed to the position
of Environment Secretary by David Cameron. Terry Fogarty and
the Advisory Group wish Caroline well in her new role, and
express their gratitude to Caroline for her continued support
and interest.

The Diagonal Lock in 2009 |
Over the course of 2008 we have made progress
in some key areas. In July we presented the Diagonal Lock
in Westminster, London. The event was attended by a cross
section of individuals from politics, industry and the media.
Many thanks to Caroline Spelman MP for hosting the event in
such a prestigious venue.
Ongoing discussions with several canal trusts and private
organisations are progressing well, and we are very hopeful
of being able to announce one, possibly two locations within
the UK that intend to bring the Diagonal Lock concept to fruition.
Interest from the media has continued to grow, and in the
past year we have had increased interest from academic establishments
in the Diagonal Lock technology.
It has been another busy and productive year for the Diagonal
Lock Advisory Group, and Terry Fogarty would like to express
his ongoing gratitude to the individuals involved in progressing
the implementation of the Diagonal Lock.

| The Diagonal Lock team is delighted
to announce the addition of Caroline Spelman MP to the
Diagonal
Lock Advisory Group. Caroline is MP for Meriden
and Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local
Government.
Caroline's extensive knowledge of politics is a great
asset to the Diagonal Lock project.

of an alternative to a conventional canal lock would
benefit Britain’s canal system by speeding up
traffic on the canal network to the point where freight
could return to the canal system.” |

The Diagonal Lock in 2008 |
Moving into 2008, I am pleased to reflect on the significant
progress we have made with the Diagonal Lock project in the
past 12 months. Our key achievements include:
- The identification of several potential locations for
the first Diagonal Lock in the UK.
- Extensive research and development into the Diagonal Lock,
further reinforcing the benefits of this technology.
- Ever increasing awareness of the Diagonal Lock, both nationally
and internationally. In particular the episode of Waterworld
screened in Febuary 07 on ITV, which featured an interview
with Terry Fogarty and an overview of the diagonal lock
technology.
- Progress in the construction of a working model of the
Diagonal Lock, which we intend to unveil later this year
(see below)
As ever, we have no intention of resting on our laurels.
It is imperative that we move forward and build upon these
achievements in the coming year, and I intend to focus my
energies and the work of the Diagonal Lock team on increasing
the profile of the Diagonal Lock and identifying the optimal
locations for this technology to be exploited fully. I am
also keen to increase the awareness of the Diagonal Lock throughout
the international community, and in doing so promote British
innovation abroad.
Much of the ongoing success we have had is due to the excellent
work of our associates, and I would like to take this opportunity
to thank them for their continued efforts. I am of course
eager to forge new relationships within industry, government
and the business and academic communities, as they are key
to our ongoing progress.

Working Model of the Diagonal
Lock |
A working model of the Diagonal Lock is currently
being built, with the intention of unveiling it at a
formal launch event later this year. Individuals from
industry, politics, business and media will be attending
this event.

Online Visitor Survey

For the past several months, visitors to diagonallock.org
have been responding to our online Visitor Survey. We have
been pleased with the response from visitors to our site,
which has been overwhelmingly positive in the comments received.
Furthermore, we have been pleasantly surprised be the number
of responses from overseas, from people in New Zealand, Singapore,
USA and Brazil to name a few!
